An Easy-as-Pie Sweet and Sour Sauce (no red sauce here...golden)

I got this sweet and sour sauce recipe with no ketchup from a friend in Alaska when I was stationed there years ago. After having to put up with the so-called 'sweet and sour sauce' that American Asian restaurants serve (theirs are only sweet), I was happy to receive it.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • ¾ cup chicken broth

  • ¾ cup white vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  • ¼ cup cold water

  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch

Directions

  1. Stir together sugar, chicken broth, vinegar, oil, soy sauce, salt, and garlic in a medium saucepan until combined; bring to a boil.

  2. Whisk together water and cornstarch in a small bowl until cornstarch is dissolved; whisk into boiling mixture. Cook sauce until thickened, 5 to 7 minutes.

Cook’s Note

Use a pot that allows room for the bubbling sauce to prevent burning your skin while stirring.

Unlike the majority of American restaurants that I've been in, this is truly sweet and sour and golden in color, as opposed to red.
