If you shop in malls, you’ve probably encountered an Orange Julius stand. And if you’ve tried the namesake drink, you’ve probably wondered what the heck is in it: The ingredients in the creamy, frothy, orangey, vanilla-flavored concoction have been a secret since Julius Freed started serving the drink in 1928. Freed was running an orange juice stand in Los Angeles at the time, when his business partner, Bill Hamlin, insisted they needed to sell something snazzier. When Freed unveiled the first version of the orange shake, customers went wild, often shouting, “Give me an Orange, Julius!”— coining the drink’s name, and eventually the chain’s as well. We’ve received tons of letters from fans like Dee Urban of Orchard Park, NY, asking for the signature recipe. No one at the company’s Edina, MN, headquarters would give us any info, so chefs in Food Network Kitchens tasted the original, then whipped up this perfect copy.
Mix the orange juice concentrate with 1 cup water in a large measuring cup or bowl. (You can also use 2 cups orange juice instead of this mixture.)
Transfer the orange juice to a blender. Add the milk, vanilla, both sugars and 1 cup ice and blend until smooth and frothy. Divide among 4 chilled glasses.
